Understanding Sprite Walk Animation

I’ve only ever done Sprite animation once last year, and it looked horrible and stiff. So for this project I decided to be careful and looked at Sprite Walk animations frame by frame paying close attention to the shape and arrangement of the legs.

There’s different types of walk animations, most separated by the year their game was produced some of the old ones are as simple as only two frames.

Where as most new games have sprites with at least six frames. There’s also a lot more bounce and flow in modern sprites. Every has a far more natural feel to it.

I focused on a six frame animation of Mario and used it as my main guideline for my own animation.
